Multilayered particles are emerging as a powerful platform in pharmaceutics, especially for targeted, triggered and sustained drug delivery. These novel delivery systems exhibit advantages over single-layered particles, such as mitigating burst release of drugs. In this article, an overview of recent developments in the fabrication of multilayered polymeric particles, towards their utilization in therapeutic applications, will be provided. Fabrication techniques that aid in engineering multilayered particles will first be discussed. Towards the end, a critical outlook on the key issues associated with this particulate delivery system will be addressed.
