There is no known fundamental limit to the performance of thermoelectric materials as characterized by the dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, and in fact there has been significant recent progress in improving the performance of practical materials. Here we discuss some of the issues involved in improving ZT starting from transport theory, with particular emphasis on recent results on IV-VI chalcogenides and filled skutterudites.
