Little is known about systemic plant responses to abiotic stress. Two recent papers now shed light on the identification of long-distance signals in response to drought or light stress. The new data suggest that leaf transpiration via abscisic acid (ABA) is controlled by remote signals from roots and leaves for efficient use of water.
