The singular chemical structure and the size of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) provide their extraordinary properties. Many researchers have used the electronic characteristics of CNTs to develop electrochemical analytical methods and sensing devices with improved characteristics. In this overview, we discuss the most significant innovations in electrochemical sensing based on CNTs, as reported in the past five years. We highlight the advantages of this type of nanostructured material and the main performance parameters achieved. We also discuss several problems that hinder the widespread use of these devices in practical applications and describe some possible future trends. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
