A bile acid based anion-receptor has been synthesized which forms a stable gel in CHCl3-DMSO cosolvent in the presence of HSO4- ion. The anion-selective gel formation can be used for the recognition of HSO4- ion. An analogous receptor with pyridine moiety has also been synthesized which shows higher selectivity and binding affinity for HSO4- ion but does not exhibit the gelation behaviour.
