A tryptophan-analog host whose interactions with ammonium ions in water are dominated by the hydrophobic effect

The binding of quaternary ammonium guests to a flexible, indole-based host has been studied in both aqueous and organic solvents. Binding was shown to depend strongly on the hydrophobic effect and less on the cation-pi interaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
