Synthesis of 3-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolinones from anthranilic acids and triethyl orthoformate

A one-step, convenient approach to the synthesis of 3-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolinones by the reaction of anthranilic acid with triethyl orthoformate in the presence of a catalytic amount of concentrated sulfuric acid has been developed. The possible reaction pathway was proposed.
