Silica gel-supported polyphosphoric acid (PPA-SiO2) was found to be an efficient catalyst for the one-pot condensation reaction of aryl aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate, and ammonium acetate to afford the corresponding 1,4-dihydropyridines in excellent yields. The main advantages of the present approach are short reaction times, clean reaction profiles, and simple experimental and workup procedures.
