Reaction of O-arylhydroxylamine hydrochlorides with either cyclic or acyclic ketones in the presence of methanesulfollic acid leads directly to the benzofuran derivative via a proposed one-pot condensation-rearrangement-cyclisation reaction sequence in good to excellent yields.
