A facile strategy has been developed to synthesize BaMoO4 microcrystals with different morphologies, such as octopus-like, flower-like, and Chinese-cabbage-like, by using ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid as chelating and capping reagent at room temperature. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transformer infrared spectroscopy were introduced to characterize the composition, morphology, and chemical information of the as-obtained products. The effects of a series of experimental parameters, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid quantity and the reagent concentrations, on the morphology and photoluminescence properties of the consequential BaMoO4 microcrystals were investigated in detail. The photoluminescence spectra of the obtained BaMoO4 microstructures exhibited different emission intensities. This method could be readily extended to synthesize BaWO4 microstructures with various morphologies. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
