A new solution was developed for quickly and easily estimating the maximum height of capillary rise. The solution is theoretically based and all the parameters are easily obtained. The results obtained by the solution are compared with a series of experimental data from open-tube capillary rise tests. The solution gives more realistic and accurate predictions for the maximum height of capillary rise than previously proposed equations. (C) 2014 The Japanese Geotechnical Society.
