A naphthocoumarin-based chemosensor capable of sensing cyanide and cadmium ions was designed through a reversible reaction with the two toxins. It exhibited rapid reversible fluorescence responses to cyanide anions through Michael addition and to cadmium cations through metal-induced elimination with reversible cycling in aqueous buffer.
