The fracture behavior of ultrafine-grained Ni produced by high-pressure torsion was examined. The fracture toughness estimated for different crack propagation directions was assessed with J-Integral, stretched zone width and crack tip opening displacement measurements. The results indicate an exceptionally good combination of strength and fracture toughness. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
