This paper made a Global Scope Assessment on Chinese aluminum industry. The synthetic benefits of electrolyzed aluminum industry in China and in related countries were investigated. The results showed that the link-integrated production frame could contribute to improving the competitiveness of Chinese aluminum industry. It was also shown that the production using self-bake cell technology must be prohibited. In order to confirm a sustainable development of Chinese aluminum industry government should reform the present tax policy. The comparison of resources consumption and synthetic benefit between practical production situation and optimal development pattern of Chinese aluminum industry in 2005 was analyzed. It was shown that more synthetic benefit and less energy Consumption and pollution emission could be realized in optimal one. Although domestic tax revenue would be reduced in the optimal pattern, the positive effect from energy saving and environment protection was more attractive. The developing strategy for Chinese electrolyzed aluminum industry was also discussed in this paper. Chinese government should vigorously Compress the overheated investment in domestic electrolyzed aluminum industry. At the same time, China should take full advantage of the chance of global economy and the overseas resources to meet domestic demand on aluminum. China should also provide incentive policy to encourage the aluminum recovery industry. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
