We discuss Lehodey et al.'s (2009) approach to linking ocean models to population dynamics of large marine predators, consider its benefits and limitations, and outline alternative approaches. We advocate a middle ground between Lehodey et al.'s pragmatic, phenomenological approach and the detailed mechanistic approach common to most individual based models. These models should capture the essence of critical processes controlling recruitment and dynamic density-dependent and environmental effects. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
