A series of polyurea (PU) samples were prepared and coated with varying thicknesses of commercially available solvent and water-based intumescent paints. Another series of PU composite samples, containing different types of flame retardant additives, were prepared and coated with the intumescent paints. The fire behavior of the samples was investigated by subjecting the samples to the heat flux of the cone calorimeter. The data indicate that the intumescent coat is very effective in imparting flame retardancy to the samples. Combining the flame retardant additives with the coating has no additional effect.
