High impact polystyrene (HIPS) is a classical reactor polymer blend produced by in-situ polymerization of styrene in solution with polybutadiene rubber. It is well established in the literature the importance of particle size and rubber cross-link density on the particle cavitation capability and on the controlling of toughening mechanisms in the styrene matrix. In the present work transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and low-angle laser light scattering (LALLS) were employed for investigating particle size distribution, with digital imaging being applied in the quantitative analysis of the micrographs. Measurements of apparent volume fraction and average particle size were carried out for different slice thicknesses in TEM and compared with the statistical parameter D-[4.3] obtained by LALLS.
