Gao et al. [Phys. Rev. B 80, 094523 (2009)] attribute the increase in the superconducting transition temperature of metastable Sr2CuO4-v to the increase in volume that is achieved by replacing 30% of the Sr in Sr2CuO4-v by Ba. We note that when the samples with and without the Ba substitution are properly normalized there is no such effect and offer an alternative explanation for their data.
