An in situ technique is employed to tailor the valence states of copper in CuO delta/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts with the purpose of inducing superior catalytic performance for simultaneous elimination of NO and CO. The catalyst with zero-valent copper exhibits excellent catalytic performance, which is comparable with the conventional supported noble-metal catalysts.
