The Hydrocarbon Generating Potential Index ([S-1+S-2]/TOC) of the present source rock shows a particular variation pattern on the strata profile. This pattern reflects the divergences of hydrocarbon generation process, hydrocarbon residual process, and hydrocarbon expulsion process. Based on these divergences, the hydrocarbon expulsion model of the source rock can be established. Combined with the other parameters of source rock, the hydrocarbon expulsion quantity can be calculated, and the hydrocarbon expulsion history also can be ascertained. According to the study on the source rocks in Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China, this method shows its practical advantages.
