Young infants, persons with hemoglobin disorders, and individuals who are immune compromised, such as those with human immunodeficiency virus and cancer, are at risk for severe Salmonella disease, including bacteremia, meningitis, and osteomyelitis. Objectives After completing this article, readers should be able to:1. Describe the epidemiology of nontyphoidal salmonellosis. 2. Recognize the clinical features of enteric fevers. 3. Appropriately treat the young child with Salmonella infection. 4. Understand ways to prevent Salmonella infections. 5. Use typhoid vaccines when indicated.
