The induced colour in single crystals of calcium fluoride irradiated with gamma-rays and reactor neutrons have been investigated by optical measurements (absorption and photoluminescence). The optical absorption spectrum increases slightly by increasing gamma-rays dose up to 10(6) Gy and absorption bands centred at about 225, 260, 340, 396 and 580 nm are observed. At higher doses, in the case of reactor neutrons irradiation, the absorption spectrum shows a large absorption band centred at about 415 nm and shoulders at 340 nm and 550 nm. This indicates that the absorption bands at 225, 260 and 580 nm are probably saturated at higher doses. Whereas, the band at 396 nm presents both saturation and linearly increasing behaviour. On heating a sample after irradiation, the absorption bands at 225, 260 and 580 nm disappear at 140 degrees C, and the 396 nm absorption band disappears above 250 degrees C. Photoluminescence excited with 325 nm photon shows an emission band centred at about 420 nm in the non-irradiated sample. The intensity of such band deceases after irradiation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
