A magnetic or an electrical field applied to a metallic specimen will be distributed according to the properties of the crack in the specimen. Researchers have used the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the distribution of an alternating magnetic field around a crack on a paramagnetic material. However, the simulation using this method becomes complex and time-consuming depending on the degree of accuracy desired. In this paper, we suggest a new, easier method, using dipole model (DM). The simulated results from this new method are verified by comparing them to the experimental results obtained by using Magneto-Optical/Eddy Current Imager system. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
