A new path to IL-1β production controlled by caspase-8

Maturation of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1 beta is achieved mainly by the canonical caspase-1 inflammasome. An alternative caspase-8-dependent inflammasome that is engaged after stimulation with dectin-1 during fungal and mycobacterial infection has now been described.
