Virgaria boninensis, a new hyphomycete classified in the Xylariaceae (Ascomycota), was isolated from soils in the Bonin Islands, Japan. It is characterized by olive gray colonies and solitary, reniform, light brown sympodial conidia. Morphologically, the species is similar to V. nigra, but it is different from V. nigra in phylogeny and also differs with length of fertile part. (C) 2013 The Mycological Society of Japan.
