A method has been developed for the selective solid phase extraction of Pd(II) based on the adsorption of its 5(p-dimethylaminobenzylidene)rhodanine (PDR) complex on silica gel-polyethylene glycol (Silica-PEG) as a new synthesized adsorbent. The adsorbed complex was eluted using hydrochloric acid-acetone mixture and the concentration of Pd(II) was determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The preconcentration conditions of analyte such as the effect of acid concentration, elution parameters, flow rate and adsorbent amount were investigated and optimized. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 2-80 ng mL(-1) with detection limit of 0.54 ng mL(-1) and the enrichment factor was 125 for a 250 mL sample volume. The relative standard deviation of the method was < 4%. The application of this new adsorbent to preconcentration and determination of palladium was estimated by using water, dust and ore samples spiked with different amounts of Pd(II).
