Autophagy can orchestrate a variety of cellular responses to dangerous stimuli. Our understanding of the physiologic roles of autophagy has recently expanded; in addition to its other roles, autophagy now appears to play an essential role in regulating inflammatory responses. This review describes recent findings concerning the roles and mechanisms of autophagy in controlling excessive inflammation. (C) 2011 Institut Pasteur. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.
