Soluble proteins from roots of pea exposed to 10 mu M cycloheximide (CH) during 72 h were analyzed using a proteomic method. Thirty-three proteins were found to be down regulated by CH. Unexpectedly, the contents of almost 29 proteins were increased in CH treated roots. It might be the first found fact of not only inhibition but also activation of protein accumulation in eucaryotic cells under the influence of CH. The largest part of the identified CH-induced proteins was involved in the phenylpropanoid antipathogen metabolism (enzymes of phytoalexins and lignin synthesis). Our study allowed us to reveal a new CH phenomenon-accumulation of enzymes involved in defense metabolism. The mechanism of this unusual phenomenon is unknown and its elucidation is the task of future study.
