The optimal performance of a generalized irreversible chemical engine cycle with irreversible mass transfer, mass leakage and internal dissipation in which the mass transfer obeys diffusive law is analyzed and optimized in this paper. A numerical example is given to show the effects of mass-reservoir chemical potential ratio, mass transfer coefficient ratio, mass leakage coefficient and internal irreversible parameter on the power output versus the efficiency characteristic of the cycle. The results can provide some theoretical guidance for the design of practical engines. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
