The influences of long period stacking order phase and texture on compressive behavior of the extruded Mg-10Gd-2Y-0.5Zn-03Zr alloy are studied in the article. The results show that the peak stress and strain of the extruded alloy are 532 MPa and13.8% and 483 MPa and 21.7%, in the 0 degrees (extrusion direction) and 45 degrees (inclined 45 degrees to extrusion direction) orientation specimens, respectively, exhibiting obvious compressive anisotropy of mechanical properties. The long period stacking ordered phase has an important effect on the anisotropy of compressive mechanical properties due to the distribution of lamellar long period stacking ordered phases primarily aligned with the extrusion direction. A higher compressive strength is expected in 0 degrees orientation specimens since it is more difficult to shear across long period stacking ordered phase than along the phase. Despite weak texture intensity, both the texture and the twin contribute partly to higher strength and peak strain in 0 degrees and in 45 degrees orientation specimens, respectively. The compression curve in 0 degrees orientation specimens exhibits two-stage deformation behavior, which is related to the formation of limited new {10 (1) over bar2} twinning and kinking of the long period stacking ordered phase in stage I with smaller work hardening rate and the inhibition of twin deformation in stage II with higher work hardening rate, respectively.
