Cadmium sulfide (CdS) microspheres assembled by high-quality nanorods have been successfully synthesized on a large scale by hydrothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone as surfactant. The diameters of CdS microspheres are very uniform and about 600 nm. The width and length of these nanorods are about 60-120 nm and 150-200 nm, respectively. The resulting products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. XRD pattern shows the resulting products are wurtzite (hexagonal) phase CdS. PL spectrum reveals that the PL spectrum (lambda(ex)=365 mn) of CdS microspheres has a single emission band located at 519 nm (2.39 eV). The influence of the concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone on the morphologies of CdS nanostructures has been investigated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
