Hierarchical structured Co1-xS microrods have been first fabricated in a high yield by a one-pot complex-surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method. The microrod is assembled by numerous interleaving nanoplates. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the samples. The mechanism for the formation of the hierarchical microstructures has been proposed. Additionally, the magnetic characterization suggests that the obtained Co1-xS microrods are ferromagnetic at low temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
