A coupled multi-physics cell model is presented which takes into account the full physics stack model, a 1D foil model and a 1D thermal model. Procedures are described for calculating the stack impedance and solving the foil and stack models self consistently. A foil impedance Blot number is used to decide if the stack or the foils are dominating the cell impedance, and whether a 1D foil model is required for accurate simulations. When a 0D foil model is deemed sufficient an empirical procedure is described for calibrating this model to yield accurate results. The fully coupled model is used to explore the effects of cell size and internal tab configurations on the simulated high current voltage profiles. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society.
