In this study, we investigate CdSe based core-shell quantum dots as potential active materials for nonlinear optical applications.. A detailed characterization of the linear and nonlinear optical properties is carried out for QDs in solution and within two electronically similar sol-gel hosts, hafnia and zirconia. The favorable absorption And emission properties of the solid-state hybrid sol-gel/QD matrices are exploited for the realization of up cavity less laser.
