We have suggested a novel concept of Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry Using Inductively Coupled Plasma as an atom source (ICP-RIMS). Atomic sample vapor produced by an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) can be analyzed using element-selective resonance ionization process, therefore, no chemical preparation for sample and isotopic standard are required. In addition, atoms thermally excited into metastable states by the ICP can be easily ionized by visible lasers in ICP-RIMS. We have demonstrated that the resonance ionization scheme via the metastable states is available through preliminary experiments in which a laser ablation process was used as an excited atom Source instead of the ICP. From these features, isotope ratio analysis by ICP-RIMS is expected to be convenient technique with high throughput and no chemical preparation.
