This paper describes the role of lightweight synthetic particles (LSP) on the restrained shrinkage cracking behavior of mortar in sealed conditions. The free shrinkage, elastic modulus, split-tensile strength, and restrained shrinkage behavior of mortar were investigated with respect to the inclusion of low volumes of LSP. Although the use of the LSP increases free shrinkage, decreases tensile strength, decreases elastic modulus, and increases stress relaxation, these particles can be beneficial in reducing the stress that develops when shrinkage is restrained. This can result in a delay or possible prevention of restrained shrinkage cracking. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)MT.1943-5533.0000213. (C) 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers.
