An innovative approach for preparing submicrometre-sized spheres of low-optical-absorbance materials by selective laser heating in liquid is presented in this paper. Nano-carbon materials were used to enhance the absorption of laser energy through a mechanical-milling technique. Several hundred nanometres-size alumina spheres were successfully produced.
