Shape memory alloys are unique metallic alloys that have the ability to undergo large deformations while reverting back to their original undeformed shape, which provides recentering capabilities to the braced frame. In this article, the seismic response of steel braced frames employing shape memory alloy braces is evaluated. The research is carried out by investigating the overall behavior of the structural system as well as taking a close look at response of the system by examining the modification factors of the system. Static pushover analysis, incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis, and linear dynamic analysis are performed in order to investigate the overstrength, ductility, and response modification factors in the structural steel frames. The effects of building height, number of spans, and different types of bracings including diagonal X and Chevron are considered. Comparing the response modification factor of different system configurations indicates that the seismic response of Chevron bracing is preferable when compared with other types of bracings.
