Dense and microcrack free yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was deposited onto porous NiO-YSZ anode tubes by dip coating without any vacuum assistance. The anode tubes were prepared by slip casting. Open circuit voltage of 1.05 V was obtained at 800 degrees C, implying that the gas tightness of dip coating YSZ membranes is eligible for solid oxide fuel cell application. A fuel cell of Ni-YSZ/YSZ(20 mu m)/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-YSZ provides maximum power densities of 0.24 W/cm(2), 0.46 W/cm(2), 0.81 W/cm(2), and 1.1 W/cm(2) at 650 degrees C, 700 degrees C, 750 degrees C, and 800 degrees C, respectively. The impedance data indicate that the resistivity of the YSZ electrolyte membrane is about 40.5 Omega cm at 800 degrees C. At the same temperature, the electrode polarization resistance accounts for 74.8% of the cell's total resistance under maximum power density condition. [DOI: 10.1115/1.3119058]
