Hydrothermal reaction of copper nitrate, sodium molybdate, and 3-pyridylnicotinamide (3-pna) afforded a polycrystalline sample of [CuMoO4(3-pna)]n (1), which was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 manifests [CuMoO4]n ribbon motifs that contain two distinct types of {Cu2Mo2O4}8-membered rings. Parallel [CuMoO4](n) ribbon motifs are pillared into 2-D [CuMoO4(3-pna)](n) coordination polymer slabs by dipodal anti conformation 3-pna tethers. These possess a 3,5-connected binodal (4(2)6)(4(2)6(7)8) topology, representing the first time this topology has been observed in metal oxide chemistry. Net weak antiferromagnetic coupling was observed within the 1-D [CuMoO4](n) ribbons, with g = 1.99(2) and J = -0.45(14) cm(1). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
