The structure of some commercial sources of CrCl3(THF)(3) which might be prepared through dehydration of CrCl3 center dot 6H(2)O was discovered to be incorrect. Results of X-ray crystallographic studies showed that the correct structure was CrCl3(H2O)(THF)(2). The use of this chromium precursor may have resulted in experimental failures, especially when strongly basic reagents that can deprotonate the coordinated water were reacted. CrCl3(THF)(3) prepared through Soxhlet extraction of anhydrous CrCl3 using THF is the correct form of CrCl3(THF)(3). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
