2,4-Dichloroquinazolines were synthesized by the cyclization of anthranilonitrile using bis(trichloromethyl) carbonate (BTC) with the aid of catalytic amount of triphenylphosphine oxide (Ph3PO) at 120 degrees C. This method was also applied to the synthesis of 2,4-dichlorothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine. The plausible mechanism is presented.
