Is the position of JC high? Yes. Is it on a downhill path? Yes. But even a starved camel is better than the level of those domestic magazines with a score of only ten or so. Take a look at the articles inside and compare them directly in similar fields, and you will know that JC still has a very high research depth.
Also, Applied Surface Science, a journal that publishes junk articles, has been listed in the first district of the Chinese Academy of Sciences this year. How can JC, no matter how poor it is, be worse than a journal like Applied Surface Science that can even pass and publish articles on "qi gong synthesis method" and "chanting synthesis material method"? Applied Surface Science published several articles last year on qi gong chanting synthesis materials and materials that can "suppress the novel coronavirus through space," which you can easily find on Zhihu by searching for the keywords. It's astonishing. Those who criticize JC and praise Applied Surface Science should calm down after reading those amazing articles before embarrassing themselves.
Applied Surface Science can publish articles on qigong and metaphysics and still be listed in the first district, and there are plenty of domestic papers with connections that are also listed in the first district. The Qing Dynasty has been gone for over a hundred years, but there are still people daring to say that JC doesn't deserve to be in the first district?
As for myself, I am in my forties, about to turn fifty, and have been in this field for over twenty years. I have published several articles in journals such as JACS, NC, JC, AM, ASS, Small, and so on. Indeed, JC has been on a decline in the past two years. The quality of some so-called new materials papers published in JC is increasingly unworthy. A few months ago, I even discussed with my former colleague whether this journal would be downgraded, and I didn't expect it to actually happen. However, the comment by angewwang downstairs is too extreme. Supporting JC may be because angewwang has published a paper in this journal, but the most taboo thing to do in any field is to blindly praise or criticize. ASS still holds authority in the field of membrane materials (although overall, I personally believe that it is in the upper range of the second quartile in this field). angewwang is probably still a student, not familiar with the situation. Let's calm down and focus on studying without negativity.
Lastly, I hope JC can return to the same level as NC in its prime! Of course, this cannot be achieved without everyone's efforts.
