Economics professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon conducted a study in 2018 that included 3,000 married people and discovered that certain factors enhance the chance of divorce. The research discovered that the more money spent on engagement rings, the more probable it was to divorce - especially after the ring cost more than $2,000 (£1,500). “Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 (£1,500) and $4,000 (£3,000) on an engagement ring is associated with a 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce as compared to spending between $500 (£376) and $2,000 (£1,500),” the article states.
