Summary: A sensitive method for simultaneous detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)) in soybean, corn, and rice was developed using bispecific monoclonal antibody (BsMAb) and quantum dot nanobead lateral flow immunoassay (QB-LFIA). The method showed higher sensitivity compared to traditional LFIA.

Summary: The number of Alzheimer's disease (AD) affected patients is increasing and effective cure is still unavailable. Inflammation, oxidative stress, Aβ, and tauopathy are associated factors of AD. Sodium butyrate (NaB), an HDAC inhibitor, has been found to be neuroprotective. This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of NaB in cells stimulated with TNF-α/Aβ and LPS. The results showed that NaB reduced cell death and NO production, decreased tau hyperphosphorylation and APP/BACE, Aβ expressions, restored cell viability, downregulated apoptotic proteins, increased Nrf-2/HO-1 expressions, and reversed reactive oxygen species. These findings suggest that NaB could potentially be a therapeutic agent against AD.

Summary: The oral administration of 50% vermicompost tea (VCT) in a mouse model has been found to reduce ear allergic scores and alleviate histological changes caused by eczema. Additionally, levels of Th2-associated and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-13) as well as IgE in serum and ear tissues were significantly reduced by VCT. These findings suggest that oral administration of 50% VCT has immunomodulatory effects on the development of eczema and potential as a nutraceutical candidate for eczema treatment.

Summary: Urban and ex-urban residents are increasingly using community gardens to supplement their diets, engage with neighbors, and learn new skills. However, the soils in these gardens can pose a threat to human health if contaminated with metals. This study analyzed the heavy metal content in the soils of 20 Philadelphia-region community gardens and the produce from 6 gardens, revealing that a significant portion of both soil and produce samples exceeded safe lead levels.

Summary: The Healthcare Waste Disposal Method Selection is a complex problem requiring multi-criteria decision-making methods. This study introduces an enhanced MCDM method to prioritize and select the best disposal methods. The results show that environmental, economic, technical, and social criteria are the most important, and certain sub-criteria and methods have higher priority.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) and their anti-cancer effects in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that AgNP had anti-proliferative effects on CT26 and MCA205 cell lines and could release calreticulin. However, immunization with AgNP-treated tumor cell debris failed to induce a protective immune response in vivo. Further research is needed to explore the combination of AgNP with other ICD inducers to enhance their anti-tumor effect in vivo.

Summary: This report investigates the impact of nine environmentally-relevant PFASs on the respiratory burst, and finds that PFHxA and GenX can suppress the respiratory burst. The study demonstrates for the first time that these PFASs can suppress neutrophil function, and supports the use of zebrafish larvae and a human cell line as screening tools for identifying chemicals that may suppress human immune function.

Summary: Activated residual Dodonaea Viscosa (ARDV) was synthesized through a simple chemical activation process and used as a cost-effective adsorbent for removing methyl green molecules (MG) from water. The ARDV was characterized and its adsorption properties were examined using batch method. Langmuir and PSO model fit well with the adsorption isotherms and kinetics data, and the maximum sorption capacity for MG was determined to be 99 mg/g at 60 degrees C. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of MG on ARDV was endothermic and spontaneous. ARDV proved to be an inexpensive and effective bio-adsorbent for treating polluted water contaminated with MG.

Summary: Arsenic contamination, caused by human activities, is a severe form of environmental pollution. Authorities worldwide are focusing on decontamination techniques due to the harmful effects of even low levels of arsenic in drinking water. This review covers well-established and cutting-edge technologies, such as ion exchanges, adsorption, membrane processes, electrokinetic processes, electrocoagulation, precipitation, phytoremediation, inexpensive methods, emerging techniques, nanoparticles, and nano based adsorbents, which can effectively remove arsenic impurities from drinking water. While adsorption techniques gain global attention due to their low cost and simplicity, nanotechnology is believed to be essential in providing clean, inexpensive water to meet human needs.

Summary: This study demonstrates the post-harvest process of agarwood leaves using yeast extract as an elicitor and evaluates its anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects. The results show that yeast extract treatment significantly increases the content of active compounds in agarwood leaves and exhibits higher anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects.

Summary: The Toll-like receptor (TLR) adaptor protein MyD88 plays an important role in airway inflammatory response. Experiments show that deficiency in MyD88 inhibits airway neutrophil influx and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by organic dust exposure, but increases airway epithelial cell mucin expression. MyD88-dependent signaling in specific lung airway epithelial cells is crucial in mediating neutrophil influx and mucin production in response to acute organic dust exposures.

Summary: This study investigated the transport of four types of microplastics under different ionic strength conditions using column experiments. The results showed that the mobility of microplastics varied with the ionic strength, with different types of microplastics exhibiting different transport characteristics. Both hydro-chemical conditions and basic properties played a combined role in controlling the transport of microplastics in porous media.

Summary: In this study, it was found that exogenous nitric oxide (NO) is involved in regulating the cytochrome P450 (CYP) gene family and mitochondrial related genes (MRG) of Pleurotus eryngii in response to cadmium (Cd) stress. The study also revealed the complexity of the CYP gene family through gene length and exon number analysis. The expression patterns showed that specific genes were up-regulated and the functions of membrane and membrane components were enhanced after NO treatment, suggesting the potential mechanism of NO in regulating P. eryngii resistance to Cd stress.

Summary: The environmental impact of the abandoned Monarch Gold Mine in Botswana was studied. The concentrations of As, Mn, Cu, Cr, and Zr in tailings and the surrounding area, as well as the plants in the area, were analyzed. The results showed severe contamination of the soil in the tailings dam and its vicinity, as well as the river sediments. The main pollutant is As, but Cu, Cr, and Zr are also slightly above the critical values for soil.
