I bet you feel safe! assessing cyclists' subjective safety by objective scores

Stefan Fuest, Mariana Batista, Frauke Luise Berghoefer, Morten Flesser, Bhagya Shrithi Grandhi, Felix Spuehler, Monika Sester, Mark Vollrath

Summary: Feeling safe is crucial for cyclists and can deter potential cyclists from using bicycles. This study proposes two scores, RG Score and FMB Score, to predict subjective safety from objective environmental information. The scores were validated by comparing them to questionnaire ratings and crash statistics. The findings highlight the importance of subjective safety as an independent construct and provide insights into aspects that can be easily measured and aspects that need further consideration.

People as planners: Stakeholder participation in the street experimentation process using a virtual urban living lab

Karyn Scerri, Maria Attard

Summary: The creation and design of intervention for street experimentation is a key challenge in sustainable urban mobility. This study proposes the use of a virtual urban living lab (VULL) to bridge the gap between stakeholders and the community in the street experimentation process. Preliminary findings suggest that virtual platforms can effectively facilitate stakeholder and community participation, and test new solutions to urban mobility and public space issues.

Adopting a socio-material perspective on life cycle assessment: Environmental impacts of circular tableware systems in Italy's bioplastics context

Anna M. Walker, Alberto Simboli, Walter J. V. Vermeulen, Andrea Raggi

Summary: This article demonstrates how a socio-material perspective can enhance the integration of life cycle assessment (LCA) within inter-firm networks. It presents a comparative LCA of two circular product systems in an Italian canteen and utilizes Actor Network Theory (ANT) to contextualize the assessment. The ANT complements LCA by providing additional information and discussing the potential of LCA in guiding sustainable production and consumption patterns.

Sustainability in Tourism: Impact of Attractiveness Factors in the World's Most Visited Destinations

Alina Haller

Summary: This study examines the sustainability factors of the world's most visited destinations using clustering and multiple regression analysis. The results show high heterogeneity in terms of sustainability, with destinations divided into four clusters. Unsustainable factors include the industry and construction sector, social insecurity, inflation, and transport services development. Renewable energy consumption is found to be sustainable, while economic growth, education, and tourism indicators have contradictory effects. These findings have decision-making implications at all levels and can help shape tourism development policies that are balanced with structural policies such as energy and environment.

Are Italian cities already 15-minute? Presenting the Next Proximity Index: A novel and scalable way to measure it, based on open data

Beatrice Olivari, Piergiorgio Cipriano, Maurizio Napolitano, Luca Giovannini

Summary: In recent years, the concept of proximity has gained attention, particularly the 15-minute city model which enables citizens to easily access essential services within a short walk or bike ride. This model offers various benefits including reduced traffic, improved health and safety, economic enhancement, and better accessibility. However, transitioning to a 15-minute city requires data-driven assessments. The NExt proXimity Index (NEXI) presented in this paper is designed to measure the level of local proximity to services based on open data. The index can be used globally and locally, providing an interactive map for visualizing the results. It is scalable and has been applied to Italy, and can be combined with additional local data for further insights.

Cultural proximity and interregional industrial linkages: knowledge diffusion or transaction costs?

Mao Qiliang, Mao Xianzhuang

Summary: This paper explores the impact of cultural proximity on interregional industrial linkages in China. The findings indicate that cultural distance hinders horizontal industrial linkages between regions, but does not restrict the formation of vertical industrial linkages. Cultural proximity primarily affects interregional industrial cooperation strategies through knowledge diffusion rather than transaction costs. Cultural proximity facilitates the formation of transregional social networks and enhances the understanding of localized tacit knowledge, giving culturally similar regions a comparative advantage in forming horizontal industrial linkages.

Settlement types, territorial discourse and the symbolic production of the 'post-industrial town'

Jay Emery

Summary: This paper investigates how dominant representations and classifications of settlement types are produced through overlapping political, media, and academic discourses, using the example of the "post-industrial town." It explores the emergence of the "post-industrial town" as a territorial production, arguing that discursive and socio-technical practices shape its symbolic imaginaries. The paper highlights the dominant symbolic production of an older, white, working-class, non-cosmopolitan, and socially conservative type of settlement, as well as the misrepresentation and misrecognition of actual places in political strategizing and discourse.
