Uncertainty stress and self-rated health during the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak

Zan Zhu, Dan Wu, Kaigong Wei, Yingbi Liu, Zhe Xu, Guihua Jiao, Lingwei Yu, Alyx Taylor, Liye Zou

Summary: This study aimed to characterize stress status during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in China and explore the underlying mechanism between uncertainty stress and self-rated health. The findings showed that age, place of residence, marital status, occupation, household annual income, infection, and quarantine status were significantly correlated with uncertainty stress. Higher uncertainty stress was associated with poorer self-rated health and higher negative emotions. The sequential mediation model revealed that negative affect and subjective sleep quality mediated the relationship between uncertainty stress and self-rated health.
