High Rate of SARS-CoV-2 Transmission Due to Choir Practice in France at the Beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Nathalie Charlotte

Summary: This is a case study documenting a high transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2 associated with an indoor choir rehearsal in France at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of 27 participants, 19 were diagnosed with COVID-19 within 1 to 12 days after the rehearsal, with 36% requiring hospitalization and 21% being admitted to an ICU. The researchers recommend the suspension of indoor choir practices in the absence of effective barrier measures.

International survey of audiologists during the COVID-19 pandemic: use of and attitudes to telehealth

Robert H. Eikelboom, Rebecca J. Bennett, Vinay Manchaiah, Bhavisha Parmar, Eldre Beukes, Saima L. Rajasingam, De Wet Swanepoel

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to audiologists having a more positive attitude towards and greater use of telehealth, but with some reservations. Telehealth was considered adequate for many audiology services, although hearing assessment and device fitting by telehealth received least support. Important barriers included technologies related to the client or remote site, and more clinician training was identified as a common theme.

Eugenio De Corso, Gianluca Bellocchi, Michele De Benedetto, Nicola Lombardo, Alberto Macchi, Luca Malvezzi, Gaetano Motta, Fabio Pagella, Claudio Vicini, Desiderio Passali

Summary: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a complex inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, which requires local and systemic treatments. Biologic agents may offer supplemental therapy for difficult-to-treat CRSwNP patients, leading to improvements in the disease.

Noah Z. Feit, Zhaorui Wang, Michelle R. Demetres, Sotirios Drenis, Katerina Andreadis, Anais Rameau

Summary: This scoping review examines the existing disparities research in the field of laryngology and highlights the limited extent of such research. The study focuses on conditions such as laryngeal cancer, voice disorders, deglutitive disorders, and airway disorders, and identifies race/ethnicity and sex/gender as the most commonly examined disparities. However, no research has been conducted on LGBTQ-related care inequity.

Assessment of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss After COVID-19 Vaccination

Summary: This study examined the potential association between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) through the analysis of vaccine adverse event reports and patient case series data. The findings did not suggest a link between COVID-19 vaccination and an increased incidence of hearing loss. The incidence rate of SSNHL after COVID-19 vaccination was similar to the expected rate in the general population.

Quality of life in sinonasal tumors: an up-to-date review

Vanessa Jane Chow, Nikolaos Tsetsos, Alexandros Poutoglidis, Christos Georgalas

Summary: This review assesses the impact of benign and malignant sinonasal tumors on patients' quality of life and their management. Endoscopic surgical management is found to be effective, but it is not clear how much it translates to better quality of life outcomes. Patients with benign tumors have better quality of life compared to those with malignancy due to absence of adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Various patient-reported outcome measures have been used, with a combination of disease-specific and generic health outcome measures providing the most insight into quality of life of patients with sinonasal tumors. Quality of life seems to undergo a bimodal impact, with an initial dip after surgical treatment followed by a slow improvement over time.

Tinnitus following COVID-19 vaccination: report of three cases

Daniela Parrino, Andrea Frosolini, Chiara Gallo, Romolo Daniele De Siati, Giacomo Spinato, Cosimo de Filippis

Summary: This study reported three cases of sudden unilateral tinnitus following BNT162b2 mRNA-vaccine injection, with rapid resolution in 2 out of 3 cases. The mechanism responsible for its development remains unclear, possibly involving a hypersensitivity reaction, an abnormal autoimmune response, or a vasculitic event. Large-scale and well-designed studies are needed to improve surveillance of the COVID-19 vaccine and better define possible adverse reactions.
