Development of Two-Phase Frictional Pressure Gradient Correlation for Saturated Cryogenic Flow Boiling in Uniformly Heated Tubes

Vishwanath Ganesan, Raj Patel, Jason Hartwig, Issam Mudawar

Summary: This study consolidates the largest total pressure drop database for cryogenic saturated two-phase flow so far, using experimental data from world literature dating back to 1964. The accuracy of frictional pressure gradient correlations is assessed, and new dimensionless criteria are developed to study the distinct fluid physics unique to cryogens. A hybrid correlation is then developed for the two distinct data subsets, which performs the best among all seminal correlations and provides excellent predictive agreement with the database.

Characterization of directional and anisotropic scattering dependency of emissivity for fibrous heat shields under non-isothermal conditions

Ahmed H. Yassin, Savio J. Poovathingal

Summary: In this study, the spectral and directional dependence of emissivity in scattering media were investigated. It was found that emissivity is strongly influenced by the scattering albedo and anisotropic scattering phase function. A generalized relation between spectral emissivity and scattering behavior for thick optical media was established using Bezier curves. A novel model was also developed to capture emissions from a medium with a non-uniform temperature distribution. This new approach provides a practical solution for the radiation energy balance at surfaces in computational fluid dynamics and thermal response simulations.

Pradeep, L. P. Singh

Summary: This study focuses on the analytical solution to the Riemann problem for a 1-D non-ideal flow of dusty gas with external force. The elementary wave curves, including rarefaction wave, shock wave, and contact discontinuity, were obtained and their implications on density, velocity of flow, and shock speed were examined. The addition of external force results in non-self-similar solutions.

Yasir A. Malik, Kilian Koebschall, Stephan Bansmer, Cameron Tropea, Jeanette Hussong, Philippe Villedieu

Summary: Ice crystal icing is a significant hazard in aviation, and accurate modeling of sticking efficiency is essential. In this study, icing wind tunnel experiments were conducted to quantify the volumetric liquid water fraction, sticking efficiency, and maximum thickness of ice layers. Two measurement techniques, calorimetry and capacitive measurements, were used to measure the liquid water content and distribution in the ice layers. The experiments showed that increasing wet bulb temperatures and substrate heat flux significantly increased sticking efficiency and maximum ice layer thickness.

Two-phase flow and heat transfer on a cylinder via low-velocity jet impact

Shuang-Ying Wu, Shi-Yao Zhou, Lan Xiao, Jia Luo

Summary: This paper investigates the two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics of low-velocity jet impacting on a cylindrical surface. The study reveals that the heat transfer regimes are non-phase transition and nucleate boiling with the increase of heat transfer rate. The effects of jet impact height and outlet velocity on local surface temperatures are pronounced at the non-phase transition stage. The growth rates of heat transfer rate and liquid loss rate increase significantly from the non-phase transition to nucleate boiling stage.
