Exploring the role of self-efficacy beliefs and learner success in English medium instruction

Summary: This study explores the relationship between student self-beliefs and success in an EMI course, finding that L2 proficiency, preparatory course performance, and self-efficacy are key factors predicting success in EMI programs. The qualitative findings support these results and highlight the need for self-efficacy development opportunities for students entering EMI study.

Learner emotions, autonomy and trait emotional intelligence in 'in-person' versus emergency remote English foreign language teaching in Europe

Summary: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, universities had to abruptly shift their courses online, which had an impact on the classroom emotions of 510 European EFL learners. The study found that students rated in-person classes as more enjoyable but also more anxiety-provoking. Additionally, there was a moderate negative correlation between foreign language enjoyment and foreign language classroom anxiety in in-person classes, which disappeared in emergency remotely taught classes. Higher levels of trait emotional intelligence and learner autonomy were positively associated with foreign language enjoyment and negatively associated with foreign language classroom anxiety in both contexts.

Individual Differences in Second Language Listening: Examining the Role of Knowledge, Metacognitive Awareness, Memory, and Attention

Summary: This study examined the effects of domain-specific knowledge and domain-general cognitive abilities on second language listening comprehension. The results showed that vocabulary knowledge had the strongest effect on listening performance, while topical knowledge and attentional control had direct effects. Only metacognitive awareness had an indirect effect on listening comprehension through topical knowledge.

Digital storytelling as an interdisciplinary project to improve students' English speaking and creative thinking

Summary: This research examined the effectiveness of digital storytelling on the English speaking and creative thinking of foreign language learners. It found that digital storytelling provides authentic and meaningful learning opportunities, effectively fostering students' development of becoming proficient English speakers and creative thinkers. Educators are recommended to implement interdisciplinary digital storytelling projects in the future.

Testing a model of growth mindset, ideal L2 self, boredom, and WTC in an EFL context

The results indicated that ideal L2 self and boredom have a direct impact on WTC, while growth language mindset influences WTC indirectly through the mediation of boredom.

Activity-induced boredom in online EFL classes

Beyond the threshold: Exploring English language proficiency, linguistic challenges, and academic language skills of Japanese students in an English medium instruction programme

Summary: This article examines the relationship between Japanese undergraduate students' English language proficiency and the challenges they face when studying international business courses in English. It also explores the thresholds of English language proficiency required for students to experience less linguistic challenges in each academic skill. The study found that English language proficiency, measured by TOEIC scores, significantly predicted the challenges faced in the English medium of instruction (EMI) program. The differences in perceived ease of study at different proficiency levels influenced the reported challenges in each academic skill. The study also highlighted the multifaceted nature of how these thresholds are determined, taking into account factors such as prior content knowledge, motivation, and the classroom learning environment.

Web-based language learning and speaking anxiety

Summary: This study investigated the presence of Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) in Indonesian vocational high school students and tested the effectiveness of web-based language learning in reducing speaking anxiety. The results showed moderate-to-serious levels of FLSA in students, but they evaluated the learning websites positively and believed that web-based language learning could alleviate their anxiety.

Exploring EFL teacher resilience in the Chinese context

Summary: Teacher resilience has been extensively studied in the field of education, however, there is limited attention given to language teacher resilience. This study used a quantitative approach to investigate the structure of resilience among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. The findings revealed a tri-factorial structure of resilience, including tenacity, optimism, and coping style. Furthermore, the study found that EFL teachers have moderate to high levels of resilience.

Gamification in mobile-assisted language learning: a systematic review of Duolingo literature from public release of 2012 to early 2020

Investigating individual trajectories in experiencing boredom in the language classroom: The case of 11 Polish students of English

Technology-enhanced collaborative language learning: theoretical foundations, technologies, and implications

Summary: With the rise of educational technology, technology-enhanced collaborative language learning has gained attention from learners, educators, and researchers. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of technology-enhanced collaborative learning on students' language knowledge and affective status. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive review in this field. This research reviewed 40 articles on technology-enhanced collaborative language learning, analyzing the nature of publications, theoretical frameworks, types of technologies, effectiveness, and implications of the studies.

Modeling the contribution of resilience, well-being, and L2 grit to foreign language teaching enjoyment among Iranian English language teachers

Summary: This study investigates the influence of positive psychological and personality-based variables on the foreign language teaching enjoyment (FLTE) of 450 Iranian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. The results show that resilience, well-being, and L2 grit significantly influence FLTE, with L2 grit being the strongest predictor among Iranian EFL teachers.

Taking stock: A meta-analysis of the effects of foreign language enjoyment

Summary: Recent studies have applied the principles of positive psychology to examine foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in applied linguistics. This study found moderate correlations between FLE and foreign language anxiety, willingness to communicate, academic achievement, and self-perceived achievement. These positive associations confirm the value of FLE in foreign language learning and highlight the need for researchers to explore positive psychology constructs in the foreign language classroom.

Distant Supervision For Chinese Semantic Role Labeling
